Medication Management

Perhaps you’ve heard someone quip that “Age is just a matter of mind. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” There’s something to be said for feeling young at heart, but when you’re watching your hairline recede, your energy wane, and your libido drop, it’s hard not to mind — and it does matter.

Aging inevitably comes with changes, but there’s no reason to give up on enjoying the experiences that make your life pleasurable and fulfilling. Our goal at The Men’s Clinic is to restore your vitality. We offer comprehensive, personalized treatment plans to help you take control of your health and improve your well-being at every stage of life. If you’re ready to regain your edge, we invite you to reach out online or call us at 803-875-MENS to schedule a consultation. We are excited to help you kickstart your journey to better health.

How Men Age

The magic number is 30. Around that time, most men begin to notice changes in their bodies as their testosterone level declines. For some, it’s decreasing energy or a drop in enthusiasm for life. For others, it’s diminishing results at work, in the gym, or in the bedroom. It could be nagging aches and pains, mood swings, hair loss, weight gain, or a struggle to get a good night’s sleep. These symptoms can often be managed in their early stages with lifestyle changes.

In the 40s, testosterone decline continues and metabolism slows. Many men find themselves burning the candle at both ends as they attempt to stay on top of their career and family demands. Stress levels skyrocket, sleep patterns suffer and healthy lifestyle habits may fall by the wayside.

Life in the 50s can be very rewarding. However, it’s also the time when your risks of heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, and other serious health conditions go up. Muscle mass declines and it becomes harder to maintain a healthy weight. You may also encounter new challenges to your abilities and desires in the bedroom.

Staying physically and mentally active can help keep you young in your 60s and beyond. These decades see a continuing decline in testosterone production (though it never fully stops), joint health, immune function, and other bodily processes. To feel your best in your golden years, commit to keeping up with preventative care and regular screenings. Your quality of life can remain high if you prioritize your health.

  • These symptoms can be distressing, but the good news is that they may respond favorably to treatment with a customized therapeutic regimen.

What Makes The Men’s Clinic Different

Our patients often say they’ve “tried it all” with no success. They’ve changed their diet. They’ve switched up their exercise routine. They’ve experimented with supplements and over-the-counter solutions. Nothing has given them the results they’re looking for.

Our mission is to change the way men experience medical care. As a patient of The Men’s Clinic, you receive direct access to your physician and a level of personalization you can’t find at a drugstore. Dr. Bouknight will design a treatment program that is entirely tailored to you — your body, your lifestyle, your needs, and your goals. This begins with a thorough consultation that includes a discussion of your symptoms and medical history, a physical exam, and a blood test. Within two days, you will receive the results of your lab work and Dr. Bouknight will explain your treatment options.

Our medical team will follow your progress closely as your treatment progresses. We ensure your treatment is both safe and effective with monthly phone check-ins and periodic laboratory monitoring. We are available to you in person, over the phone, or via email at any time if questions or concerns arise. We don’t believe in cutting corners when it comes to your care.

    Treating Low Testosterone

Testosterone levels decline by approximately one percent each year after age 30. If Dr. Bouknight determines that you have low testosterone, you may be eligible for testosterone replacement therapy. There are multiple ways testosterone therapy can be administered:

      • Gel or Cream: These topical testosterone products are applied to the skin and then absorbed by the body.
      • Patch: Testosterone transdermal patches are placed on rotating areas of the body, usually once per day at the same time each day.
      • Pellet: Pellets are small implants that are inserted into the soft tissue and release a steady, low dose of testosterone for months at a time.
      • Injection: Testosterone injections are administered into a muscle at regular intervals, typically every one to four weeks.

These approaches share a common goal — to replace the testosterone your body is no longer making — but achieve it in different ways and with varying degrees of success. We have found that the best of these options is injections. Injections are the easiest to dose and the most predictable, therefore they are the safest and most effective way to increase and maintain testosterone levels.

Over the next few weeks, you may begin to notice your energy and stamina returning, along with boosts in your libido, mood, and concentration. If you exercise, you may find that your strength and endurance are improved and your recovery time has decreased. Several months of hormone therapy can bring about additional changes for your body, including increased lean muscle mass, lower body fat, and improved bone density. Men who receive testosterone therapy report feeling stronger, sexier, and healthier, like they did in their prime.

Finding the Right Treatment for You

Your treatment at The Men’s Clinic is guided by a doctor and backed by science. Dr. Bouknight and his team make every effort to ensure a diagnosis is made and an appropriate treatment plan is executed. Because patients react to medications differently, their efficacy and side effects can vary from person to person. We will keep an eye on your progress with careful monitoring and ongoing dialogue to determine if the treatment is meeting your goals. This includes testing of your hormone levels as well as discussions about how you’re feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Our goal is to find sustainable solutions to your concerns. If your therapy isn’t working optimally, Dr. Bouknight will adjust your dose, modify your treatment schedule or recommend trying something new. Our multidisciplinary approach to men’s health is not limited to hormone therapy. We are happy to discuss other options and will continue to fine-tune your treatment until it delivers the results you want.
